When the twin towers fell I was in the sixth grade. The event occurred midway through my language arts class. However the class went by without the teacher mentioning anything to us students. It was in the following class, Technology, when the news was finally broken to us. My teacher waited until the class had all settled down, and then spoke calmly and without emotion. He said that two planes had crashed into the world trade center, and that he didn't know why or have any other information yet; he told us that we were safe and not to worry. Then we went on building Styrofoam boats like we had for the past week in his class. Some children had their parents come and take them home; I didn't understand what the big deal was. Although I grew up in New York I never really had an attachment to the buildings. It took awhile for me to realize it wasn't the buildings that were important, it was the lives lost and the war that was sure to occur. I still have classwork from 9/11/01.
