September 11, 2001 began like any other day of my sophomore year of high school. Halfway through my second period class a student from another class alerted our math class of the terrible news, "the World Trade Center has blown up." Confused, the teacher paused class and put on the television. Every news station was covering the incident, and we settled on CNN. The anchor did not have too much to add to the live filming of the blazed towers. He was receiving updates every minute and reporting them just has soon as he got word. Our hearts began to sink and the class was still as we became aware two airplanes crashed into the buildings. A few minutes had gone by in silence as we continued to watch the building burn. Minutes later, it was announced, we were under attack. This was no accident, two large airplanes had intentional flown into the World Trade Center. Tears began to run down students faces as we watched in terror as the nation we thought invincible was under enemy attack. Still no one knew how to respond, we sat quietly, eyes glued to the television, some students embracing others.

The day would only get worse as we learned more about the acts of terrorism carried out on America. Rumors went around that the White House, Pentagon, and other national monuments were targeted. Still no one could believe this was happening. When our class bell rang to release us to our next class some students stayed to continue watching the news, while others went to spread the word around campus. About an hour and a half after the incident, our school president came over the loud speaker. He confirmed what everyone had knew. He asked us to say a prayer for all those involved and to call our families, as school was canceled for the rest of the day.
