Who: Allen Salkin What: Woodstock '99 When: August, 1999 Where: Upstate New York
I covered Woodstock 99 for the New York Post and chatted with John Entwistle backstage. I told him that his appearance -- on the "new artists" stage -- was a surprise show that hadn't been well publicized. I asked him if he was worried that some fans wouldn't know it was him when he took the stage. He leaned over and said "When they hear the start of The Real Me, they'll know who it is." I also asked him whether this Woodstock reminded him of the original and he said "Actually, this reminds me of Glastonbury." There he was wearing the same Rainbow-silky shirt, and spider jewelry as I imagine he'd worn forever, his breath smelling of booze at 11 a.m. This was before the rioting, during which I lost my tent and got punched by the concert's co-promoter John Scher.
